The Department of Zoology is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to undertake investigations of the occurrence of disease in reef-forming corals in the Chagos Archipelago, Indian Ocean.
The project will focus on the relationship between environmental stress and disease occurrence including molecular investigations of the coral immune response, disease resistance and the coral microbiome. The fellow will hold a PhD or DPhil and will be experienced in coral reef ecology and coral disease work with skills that include both the ability to undertake surveys and sampling in the field and molecular biology investigations in the laboratory. Other essential requirements for the post include experience of running research projects both in the field and in the laboratory through to publication of peer-reviewed research papers in good quality journals.
The postholder must also be an experienced SCUBA diver (PADI Dive Master or Equivalent) and should have experience of working in remote locations in a team environment. Some minor supervisory/teaching duties may be undertaken including supervision of undergraduate projects and mentoring of DPhil students. It is also essential that the postholder is an excellent communicator, able to present research results at scientific meetings, to funders or to the media if required.
The post is full-time, fixed-term post for 3 years.
