academic profile Originally from the home counties, Claire gained a First Class BSc(Hons) in Zoology from the University of Edinburgh in 2004, and completed an MPhil in Development Studies at the University of Cambridge in 2007. She is studying for a DPhil, funded by the BBSRC (the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council) at Christ Church, and is based in the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford. Claire is a member of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology and the Society for the Study of Evolution. She is a reviewer for The Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the Journal of Evolutionary Biology and Evolution. Claire is also social secretary for the Christ Church GCR. research interests I develop evolutionary theory primarily to study humans. I am interested in questions like: what are the evolutionary explanations for human social behaviour? Do cultures evolve and if so how should we model them? To what extent can evolutionary models help us understand the changes in social complexity over the past 12,000 years? How do evolutionary models differ from economic rational actor models? Are economies subject to natural selection? If so, how can existing Darwinian theory be of use to policy makers? My work involves collaboration with academics and professionals from Economics, Philosophy, Political Geography, Archaeology and Molecular Biology. supervisors - Stuart West - Andy Gardner publications West SA, El Mouden C & Gardner A
