I received my M.Sc. from the Center for Genetic Improvement of Livestock, University of Guelph, Canada, where I estimated genetic parameters for various cardiovascular defects in different strains of broiler chicken (1998-2000). The focus of my doctoral work, at the Department of Integrative Biology, University of Guelph, aimed at the characterization and genomic localization of different early developmentally important candidate genes within the genomes of two tetraploid derivative species, Rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon (2000-2004). As a result of this project, I developed great interest in understanding the genetic basis of phenotypic variation both within and between species. As a postdoctoral researcher, I have worked at the University of Guelph, Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Cornell University and more recently at the EGI, where I have continued my interest in investigating the underlying genetic architecture of complex traits in vertebrate species as diverse as fish, dogs and birds.
In collaboration with Dr. Judith Mank, my current research aims to understand the role of sex-specific gene regulation and sex-specific selection in the evolution of sexual dimorphism in birds. Our understanding of how sex specific traits across many different animal species develop and evolve is very limited. However, considering that all sexually dimorphic traits are essentially the products of differences in overall gene expression patterns between males and females, we aim to investigate the genetic changes in gene expression profiles between different genders using massively parallel sequencing of RNA (RNA-Seq). This would help us to have a better understanding of the genetic network that governs the development of sex specific traits within each sex.
