In 2011 I graduated from Durham University with a BSc in Natural Sciences. Throughout my undergraduate I was involved in research at a biological station in Costa Rica. It was my visits to the lowland rainforest of Costa Rica which founded my interest in tropical systems. I am interested in not only understanding these systems but also the ways in which this knowledge is applied to current and future conservation issues. During my time in Costa Rica I worked with a whole range of taxa, most notably marine turtles. I started my DPhil in October 2011 under the supervision of Nathalie Seddon and Joseph Tobias.
Habitat fragmentation and degradation have long been proposed as key drivers in the loss of biodiversity across the Earth. Despite much time being spent trying to understand the effects of these processes large gaps in our knowledge still exist. My DPhil will explore how habitat fragmentation and degradation affects the dispersal and spatial structure of tropical forest bird populations. The knowledge gained at this local scale will then be used to improve the modelling of possible future range shifts across a variety of avian groups.
