Autobiography

After receiving an MA in German/Russian (Edinburgh University, 1968), and subsequent teaching posts, I became closely involved with the Birds of the Western Palearctic (BWP) project, almost from its inception. At first I worked as a translator of texts from German and Russian, later as a full-time writer and editor of species accounts, and most recently as a contributor to BWP Concise version and the CD versions of BWP. I have been a member of the EGI since 1980, and a Research Associate since 1999.

Research Activities

Since 2005 I have been Book Reviews Editor for The Ibis. I also work as a freelance editor and translator (from Russian and German), and have contributed in this capacity to a series of major projects (e.g., Important Bird Areas in Europe, 2000; Threatened birds of Asia: the BirdLife International Red Data Book, 2001; and the BWPinteractive DVD).
